A place of former glory still shimmers

Today I was shocked when I came across the news of plans to relocate the Universiti Malaya (UM) campus from its current historical location in Lembah Pantai, KL, to a new development in Sepang, Selangor.

Is there nothing this government will not do to fill the coffers of a select few? Even if their motives are sincere, I shudder to realise that such blatant stupidity exists in the leadership.

This reader response probably best expresses how many people feel about this decision:

UM land more important than money
Dr Hsu Dar Ren, Malaysikini, 21 June 2024

I refer to the malaysiakini report Shock over township plan for UM campus. According to the report, a prominent developer has made a bid for the Universiti Malaya's campus ground. The university authority has denied it and expressed shock over the report. I suspect even they may not even be privy to the proposal.

The piece of campus land situated in Lembah Pantai is indeed very valuable, and I tend to believe that there may have been a proposal to shift the university and develop the land, bearing in mind that there is no smoke without fire.

I am not a Universiti Malaya graduate but that is not important because I believe that it is the duty of every single Malaysian to defend the heritage of the country, and one such legacy is the Universiti Malaya campus. Businessmen, politicians, civil
servants and indeed everyone of us must understand that there is something more valuable than just money. A heritage ground is one of these priceless inheritances.

No amount of money can be equated with a heritage ground. Money earned can easily be spent, but a heritage will remain forever as a symbol of a nation and it is what nationhood is about. Imagine a proposal to shift the Buckingham Palace in London. Even though it is situated within the one-square-mile golden city centre, the British will defend this building till the end of their nationhood. Imagine a proposal to shift Harvard University from its present campus in Cambridge, US. I think the whole of America will be in an uproar because the American heritage and the pride of the nation will be challenged.

There is a Chinese saying meaning 'A gentleman loves money but you must earn it in the proper way'. Developers and businessmen, let me appeal to you - there is something more important in life than just making profit. Leave Universiti Malaya alone.

"...Money earned can easily be spent, but a heritage will remain forever as a symbol of a nation and it is what nationhood is about..."

When I read the news about this, immediately I thought of the many stories and reminisces shared by my dad, mum and all the aunties and uncles from their old uni and Fifth College days. Imagine a place where courtships had started and lifelong friendships were forged, great ideas were cultivated, and ideals and values were developed... all forgotten, desecrated and torn apart.

I remember when we were kids, during one of our family holidays in KL, my parents brought us around the UM campus and pointed out various spots and places as we walked through the grounds which still held significance for them.

"This was one of the lecture theatres most of our lectures were held in..."

"Right there, that's where dad and his engineering gang used to sit and holler at girls passing, shouting 'Wooomaaaaaan!!!!'"
(a sign of the sad plight of engineers due to the dire lack of females in their faculty)

"This is the Fifth College student residential I stayed at.... my room is somewhere up in that corner..."

I don't know about my brothers, but I was definitely not bored that day, but was eager to be able to picture how my parents had lived, worked and played in their younger days. Somehow listening to them and seeing the actual places where daily events took place, made these memories of my parents so vivid in my mind. I remember remarking candidly to my parents, "I think it could be nice to think that if we were the same age then, studying here together, we might have been good friends hanging together here!"

Although many say that the 'glory days' of UM are long gone, the afterglow of its former glory still remains. And it saddens me to think that this landmark will be torn down as if it meant nothing to the legacy and history of this nation.

Cheerios, folks!

Currently, one of my favourite indulgences is a bowl of this...

Honestly it tastes soooo good. Not too sweet but very comforting to munch on. Good thing this week it was on special at Woolworths - only $3.99 for a 680g box!!! I loaded up on 3 boxes of these.

For the past few mornings, one of the very first things I look forward to is to eat a bowl of Cheerios! I feel so happy each time I eat it. I shared this feeling with hubby just now... he remarked candidly "That's great honey, I'm so happy for you that you can have something to look forward to every morning!"

Hmmmm... do I detect a note of sarcasm there? No matter... as long as I enjoy my bowl of Cheerios, that's enough to cheer me up!

Perhaps I'll get tired of it eventually. These are a couple of other cereals that I used to be crazy about...

But after a while I got tired of them one by one.

So Mr Cheerios, I hope you are here to stay. If I ever got tired of you, I would miss the feeling I have each time I indulge in a bowlful of you.

So what are some of YOUR favourite cereals?

Cheerios, folks!

Chores chores chores...

Over time, the number of women in the workforce has been increasing. Currently many households are double income earners with both men and women employed in the workforce.

However, statistics on the number of hours spent on chores and domestic activities has remained fairly unchanged over the years with women still spending double the amount of time on domestic activities compared to men.

For men, the average time per day spent on total domestic activities is 1 hour 37 minutes in 2006, has not changed since 1992. For women, the average time spent on domestic activities is 2 hours 52 minutes a day in 2006 (Source: ABS).

Somehow despite of the way society has changed and evolved, there is still an underlying expectation that women by default should bear the bulk of household responsibilities.

Apparently from the men's point of view, there are various reasons for this... such as that the time spent on domestic activities in reality can be cut down by utilising more effient means of handling these chores. Implying that it could be the women's own fault for having to spend more hours on these activities...(?!?!?)

Frustrated sigh.

Contentedly waiting (but starting to get bored)

As I am typing this, I am watching a truck pull up to a plane and watching as food is being loaded on to the aircraft.

Where am I?

The time is 5.53PM Eastern Daylight Savings Time in Sydney, NSW. I have just come from completing a successful presentation of a successful project for our client, Microsoft. The project is generating a lof of interest globally... which is a good sign for our little consultancy in Perth. I am relieved that the project is over and glad that it was well received. So as a reward I am indulging in a teeny tiny glass of Semillon Sauvignon Blanc (after clinking it against my colleague's Beer glass with a cheery "cheers!").

FYI coincidentally, hubby was in Sydney too... and noooo it was not to tail along on my trip. He is here on his own company's bootcamp training. So he's staying at another hotel a distance away from the city centre. But I saw him last night when we met up with some of his ex-school mates for dinner. We were quite tickled by the fact that we would be in Sydney at the same time. Anyway he's staying back a few more days as his training course extends until Thursday. So that's just a bit of trivial info in case you are interested.

Sigh. One more hour until boarding time.

Someone just gave my parents a puppy. Very sad looking little thing. When I saw this pic I immediately felt so sorry for it and wished I could be there to let it curl up on my lap and give a good cuddle.

I had a vivid picture of it looking very lonely and disoriented away from its mum and sibling puppies, trying to curl up in a corner, feeling so small and abandoned looking out of the vast grounds around our house (NB: it's not really vast at all, but may seem so to the puppy). So I have a newfound purpose for my next trip to KK, to give this lonely little pup some TLC, and getting some TLC from my own dear mummy and daddy!

Anyway if you have any name suggestions for this little pup, please do share. It doesn't have a name yet, and we need a name ASAP before its current handle Ah Dog (or Atok?) starts to stick!

Why did the chicken cross the road?

DR. PHIL : The problem we have here is that this chicken won't realize that he must first deal with the problem on 'THIS' side of the road before it goes after the problem on the 'OTHER SIDE' of the road. What we need to do is help him realize how stupid he's acting by not taking on his 'CURRENT' problems before adding 'NEW' problems.

OPRAH: Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why he wants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I'm going to give this chicken a car so that he can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens

GEORGE W. BUSH : We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road, or not. The chicken is either against us, or for us. There is no middle ground here.

COLIN POWELL: Now to the left of the screen, you can clearly see the satellite image of the chicken crossing the road...

DR SEUSS : Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed I've not been told.

ERNEST HEMINGWAY : To die in the rain. Alone.

GRANDPA : In my day we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Somebody told us the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough.

JOHN LENNON : Imagine all the chickens in the world crossing roads together, in peace.

ARISTOTLE: It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.

BILL GATES: I have just released eChicken2007, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs and file your important documents. Internet Explorer is an integral part of eChicken. This new platform is much more stable and will never cra... #@&&^(C% ........ reboot.

ALBERT EINSTEIN: Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the road move beneath the chicken?

BILL CLINTON: I did not cross the road with THAT chicken. What is your definition of chicken?

COLONEL SANDERS: Did I miss one?

... So why do YOU say the chicken crossed the road?

A Warm Welcome

Last Sunday, following the theme of 'Life After Death', our pastor preached a fiery topic on Hell (previous week's topic was Heaven)

Haven't heard a Hellish sermon in ages... at the end, pastor asked the projection team to play an amusing Southpark clip on Hell. It was cute, but there and then I thought of a more fitting clip by Rowan Atkinson (aka Mr Bean) in line with the subject...

Presenting... Rowan Atkinson Live: "A Warm Welcome"

Bamboo steamer baskets

This is a fairly recent addition to my list of favourite things but I am certain that it will remain as a useful tool and much-treasured item for a long time.

This is my (relatively new) bamboo steaming baskets. They are quite inexpensive but very handy and easy to use. Just place ingredients in the baskets and stack on top of a simmering wok of water.

See how I've already put it to good use to steam some dumplings and pau... quick and easy dish to prepare in the short amount of time I have right after work before heading out to our Oxygen Youth CNY dinner

N.B. It also makes stylish and impressive way to display your dish!

'Lo hei' season

Although I am missing the more vibrant CNY festivities back in Malaysia/Singapore, here in Perth we have our share of CNY traditions... one of my favourites is the 'lo hei' or 'yee sang'. So far I've had two 'lo hei' sessions...

#1. Dinner with cell group: Chin Noodle House in Leeming

Chin's 'yee sang' is actually really good... comparable to the better ones back in Malaysia and Singapore. They were were quite generous with the fish and jellyfish too!

#2. Oxygen Youth CNY Dinner: Pot Bless at Zion Centre

The 'yee sang' ingredients were the pre-packaged store bought ones, and for the fish we used raw salmon from the Coles deli section.

This 'yee sang' tasted pretty good too... probably due the vigorous mixing by the energetic youths. And we were especially generous with the smoke salmon when we assembled the dish.

'Yee sang' is definitely one of my favourite new year delicacies. It's too bad we only eat it once a year... but perhaps that's what makes it so good... that it's not an ordinary everyday dish.

I asked one of my colleagues whether he had any 'yee sang' during the CNY dinner with his fiancee's Singaporean family. He generally likes Chinese food but says he hates 'yee sang'. He can't seem to appreciate the different contrasting textures of the dish... The slippery jellyfish and smooth raw fish, contrasted against the crunch of the crackers and pickles, all mingled together in a rich plum sauce... mmmm... just thinking about makes me crave for it all over again!

Missing the lion dancers...

Chinese New Year is just around the corner. Feeling a teeny weeny bit nostalgic because I know I'll be missing the whole CNY ching-chong-chang festivities back in KK.

I will miss the pineapple tarts
I will miss the cheesy dong-dong-chiang music
I will miss the numerous lou sang sessions
I will miss the leftover nien gao fried in egg for breakfast
I will miss gorging on mandarin oranges and bak kwa
I will miss the endless nibling of kuaci and nuts
I will miss drinking yeos packet drinks

But most of all...

I will miss those monkey-like antics of those colourful lion dancers!

Here's Douglas Lim's stand-up comedy rendition of these legendary lion dances (preceded by an also funny routine on Timberlake's Sexi Back)

See you in heaven... but not yet

Today's sermon topic: "One minute after you die..."

Where is your final destination? Heaven or Hell?

In closing his message, pastor asked us to turn to our neighbour and say "See you in heaven"... so accordingly I turned to Andrea on my left and cheerily said "See you in heaven!", then I turned to hubby on my right to say the same, and hubby quickly whispered affectionately...

"Yes, but not so soon yet, okay honey?" ^_^
