Hotel Grande Whampoa

While we were in Singapore, we enjoyed the hospitality of my dear brother.

Here are some pics of his humble crib. Relatively neat (he hasn't fully unpacked as he only moved in a month ago) and quite clean (I only cleaned a teeny weeny bit prior to taking these photos)

Tragedy!!!

Well we are back.

Back??? Back from where???

Ahah!!! Caught you... some of you so blur, didn't even realise I was away.

As usual need to upload the pics (as promised to some of you) but before that, I need to tell you our tale of woe!!! Kenapa mesti cerita??? Because it was one of the most dramatic things that happened on the last part of our trip...

Dengarlah kisah derita kami...

We woke up lazily on a Saturday morning. We had already decided to have lunch (supposed to be breakfast but cannot wake up) at Din Tai Fung for their famous Xiao Long Pao. We then thought to clear off some errands first before heading to Orchard. Sam wanted to draw some cash, while hubby needed to go to the post office.

And so it begins...

At the post office, we got an envelope from the counter and went aside to fill out hubby's KL address to send some documents to his dad. Hubby took out his wallet to refer to his Singapore IC to fill out the return address at the back of the envelope. He handed the documents to me to sort out while he filled out the registered mail form. I suppose that was when the criminal made his move. Perhaps he reached over and slipped the wallet away, or perhaps we were careless and left the wallet there while we turned back to the counter.

Either case, it was not until many minutes later when we were boarding the bus, when hubby was scrambling through his bag that he realised that his wallet was missing. We immediately dashed back to the post office, but there was no trace of the wallet. Ohhhh noooo!!!!

We walked around the vicinity hoping to find the wallet tossed aside on the ground or in a rubbish bin... maybe the person who took it threw away the wallet after pocketing the cash. But it was to no avail. We tried to remain calm and remembered to call our banks to cancel all our credit cards.

It was all very distressing. I think especially so for hubby.

Sam was quite sweet. Afer he went in one direction to try searching the area, he returned with two pieces of pandan waffles to share with me and hubby.

We went back to the post office. The lady at the counter was quite helpful. She even opened up the mail box to check if the wallet might have been thrown in there. Nothing. We left our phone number with her and she promised to call if she found anything or if someone found the wallet.

Later on, we decided to lodge a police report to have the document as a formality for requesting new cards and IDs. Ironically, the police post was located less than 100 metres from the scene of the crime. Sigh.

To be continued...

Malaysia's BN coalition suffers worst electoral defeat
Posted: 09 March 2025 0453 hrs

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's ruling coalition on Saturday suffered its biggest electoral upset ever, losing control of four state governments and failing to win the crucial two-thirds majority in parliament.

It is Barisan Nasional (BN)'s worst performance in a general election since independence in 1957.

Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi's multi-racial coalition won 139 out of 220 seats counted for the 222-seat Parliament, state television reported. Even if the BN wins the remaining two seats, it would fall short of the 148 seats needed for a two-thirds majority.

The opposition alliance of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and the Islamic Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), won 81 seats. In the outgoing parliament, the opposition had 19 seats.

The only other time the 14-party BN coalition failed to win a two-thirds majority was in 1969 when it secured 66% of the seats. This time, it would have only 63.5% if it wins the remaining two seats.

A two-thirds majority is needed to amend the Constitution. The last time the BN lost that majority was in the 1969 election.

In the 2004 elections, BN had a landslide victory when they clinched 199 of the 219 seats.

Adding to the BN's woes this time, the coalition lost control of four states - Kedah, Penang, Perak and Selangor, while PAS secured two-thirds majority to keep its hold on Kelantan.

Indicative of the scale of the debacle, three of BN's component parties - the MCA, Gerakan and MIC - were almost routed. MIC president S. Samy Vellu, Gerakan acting president Koh Tsu Koon and PPP president M. Kayveas were trounced.

PM Abdullah, who is also the BN chairman, retained his Kepala Batas parliamentary seat in Penang while his deputy Najib Tun Razak won with a huge margin in Pekan in Pahang.

Asked whether the election results showed the people had lost confidence in his leadership, Mr Abdullah said: " No...this is the people's stand to show their stand not to give us a two-thirds majority."

On the defeat of several of his Cabinet ministers, the prime minister said defeats are normal.

Besides Samy Vellu, who is also Works Minister, Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Zainuddin Maidin and Abdul Aziz Shamsuddin were also defeated in the elections.

Mr Abdullah also denied talk that he would step down as prime minister.

"I don't know who is being pressured (to step down) I'm not resigning," he told a press conference at the BN operations centre at the Putra World Trade Centre.

Mr Abdullah, who has been prime minister since November 2003, said he would have an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, on Monday on the formation of the new government.

Saturday's poll, called before it was due in May 2009, was widely seen as a referendum on PM Abdullah's rule, and Malaysians took the opportunity to administer a stinging rebuke over price rises, religious disputes and concerns over corruption.

Chinese and Indians account for a third of the population of 26 million and many complain the government discriminates in favour of Malays when it comes to education, jobs, financial assistance and religious policy.

About 70 percent of Malaysia's 10.9 million eligible voters had cast ballots, the country's top poll official said.

Very late V-day pics

We celebrated Valentine's day at Bluewater restaurant in Heathcote... a really nice restaurant, with amazing food, but which would have burnt a considerably large hole in our pockets. Thankfully, we were able to make use of the birthday present from my boss which was a $150 dining voucher at this establishment. So we were able to go all out and splurge ourselves...

Top left: Oysters (au naturel) with salmon roe, citrus vodka, sour cream and lime. Mmmmm.... delectable!!!
Top right: A mixed platter of Salmon Fish Cakes, Yoghurt Bread (loved this one!), Grilled Salt & Pepper Squid, Spinach and Fetta Cheese Pasty, and a Duck and Mushroom Confit
Bottom left: Hubby's dessert - Moist Chocolate Cake, with Rum & Raisin Ice Cream and candy floss
Bottom right: My dessert - Cream Brulee, with Vanilla Pod Ice Cream and candy floss

Sorry there are no pics of the mains, we were too excited about the food that we forgot to snap some pics of them, but you're interested I had salmon and hubby had a baramundi, which were both absolutely lovely. Especially enjoyed with some Shiraz and Cab Sav.

We felt very luxurious slowly savouring the meal, and enjoying first class views of the Perth skyline. We lingered slowly over dinner, past sunset, then dusk and late into the evening.

It's so nice to have treats like this once in a while, eh?
